Meeka FM (A History)

Meeka FM was established in late 1995, at the Meekatharra District High School, after eight weeks of tests Meeka FM 88.0 was officially opened on the 19th of February 1996

Kevin Leahy local MLA had the honour of declaring the station open before a large gathering of Meekatharra District High School children and various prominent members of the community, parents and teachers.

Ex Principal Jeff Macnish who, together with Bryce Easton, pioneered the project, was also in attendance, having travelled from Mullewa exclusively for the evening
The opening which was broadcast live, featured new Principal Roy Ryan and radio co-ordinator Clint Martin who introduced the six trainee radio announcers - Neeba Ward, Alison Gentle, Jason Wingo, Regina Eagan , Dean Shay and Rhonda Shay

The Trainees undertook a 26 week course funded by DEET (Department on Employment, Education and Training). The course involved audio operations, radio presentation and announcing techniques.

Due to Government cut backs funding was withdrawn and the radio station was then offered to the community.

In September 1997 the radio station was relocated to its present location on Hill St, with funding provided by the Meekatharra Shire.

The building in which Meeka FM operates, was kindly donated by Dominion Mining.

Thanks to Scott Fitzpatrick and Ron Hiscock, without whom the hard job of shifting to the new premesis would not have happened.

Meeka FM turned ten on Sunday 19th Febuary 2006.

In 2003, then 21yo chairperson Eric Seery went to Canberra and represented Meeka FM at the CBAA conference. Eric was also a member of the National Youth Media Network. Also in 2003, Anita Seery attended the WACBA conference in Scarbourough, and after a long break attended the CBAA conference in Fremantle in 2005. More recently Anita attended the Southern Community Media Association's conference in Ballarat.
The Meekatharra Bushman, Graeme Parker joined the radio station in 2003 and has remained our sturdiest secretary treasurer ever.

The Radio station has enjoyed close affiliations with many Meekatharra business' and community groups. we share a block of land with SES and for many years have also shared members and social gatherrings.

In 2004 Meeka FM recieved a substantial amount of money from a local lady who was blessed with a lucky lotto ticket, with this donation Meeka FM was able to upgrade some of it's technologies in the studio.

We are gratefull to everyone involved in the radio station. We wouldn't still be here if it wern't for you all. On behalf of the volunteers at Meeka FM we want to thank you all.
